Let us be no longer be immature like children forever changing our minds about what we believe because someone else has told us something different or has cleverly lied to us and made the lie sound like truth. Instead, we will lovingly follow the truth at all times — speaking truly, dealing truly, living truly — and so become more and more in every way like Christ (Eph. 14-15, TLB)
Your worldview is the overall perspective from which you see, act and interpret the world.
I. The most pervasive philosophy currently in America : postmodernism. What it is: Truth and reality are constructed by the social unit . There are no standard moral principles, only cultural morays that are constantly changing, depending on what our society tolerates, condones or condemns. Reality is “socially constructed ” by those authorities who understand best what society needs. II. Now there are three common myths pervasive in postmodernism: A . The sincerity myth . “ It doesn't matter what you or your social group believes as long as you're sincere. You construct your own reality – just be sincere in following it. However, sincerity is not enough to be in touch with reality. A person can be sincere, but wrong.
B. The situational myth . You can believe one thing in one situation and believe another thing in another. However, situational ethics is like having no ethics at all.
C. The tolerance myth. Postmoderns value tolerance more than they value truth .
However, all ideas are not equally valid.
III. What happens when we fall for these myths? -- “ Truth decay .” Immaturity . Ephesians 4:14-15 (above)
2. Immorality. Ephesians 4:19 -- They don't care anymore about right and wrong and they've given themselves over to immoral ways. Their lives are filled with all kinds of impurity and greed. 3. Gullibility . 2 Thessalonians 2: 12 -- Since they refused to trust truth, they're banished to their chosen world of lies and illusions.
4. Crime. Proverbs 29:18 -- When there is ignorance of God crime runs wild.
5. Injustice. Isaiah 59:14 -- Our courts oppose people who are righteous, justice is no where to be found, truth falls dead in the street and fairness has been outlawed.
6. Confusion. Galatians 1:6-8 -- I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ.
7. Fragmentation . Psalm 133:1 -- How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity! (Ps 133:1)
IV. There is true truth, and there is only one reality.
The Proverb says, A wise person is hungry for truth, while the fool feeds on trash (15:14, NLT).
If you base your life on a faulty worldview, the results are disastrous . Yet your worldview is your choice.
