Jesus was at the height of his popularity, but this was one of the main event where the crowds left Him. Who was it that turned away from Jesus when he proclaimed that he said, I AM the Bread of Life? The Bible tells us: 1. There were the " Gimme stuff " folks – "Give me" without a "Jesus is Lord" relationship. In verse 26, Jesus told these folks, you are looking for me…because you ate the loaves and had your fill. God is a Blessing God, but He also blessed us to work for a living, so that we can provide for ourselves, bless His work and others. There are two kinds of hunger. there is physical hunger which only physical food can temporarily satisfy, and there is spiritual hunger that physical food can never satisfy. 2. Then there were the legalists . You see them in verse 28. Others asked him, What must we do to do the works God requires? There were people who wanted a list of rules. For legalists, it is easier to adhere to rules than it is to live in a good relationship with God. In verse 29, Jesus answered, The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent. To believe Jesus is not a work; it's the way of faith. Faith works, but faith is not a work. It is true trust in God. 3. The third group to turn away from Jesus were the sensationalists . In verse 30 they said to Jesus, what miracle sign are you going to perform that we may see it and believe you? Our ancestors had manna in the wilderness. Moses gave them bread from heaven to eat. Jesus (33), Moses did not give you bread from heaven. It's My Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. 4. Then there are believers who would not turn away. They said to Him, 'Lord, give us this bread always' (34). This is Bread in a Person – the Person of Jesus Christ. The true Bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world! The Bread of God is Life-Giving. Jesus said, I AM -- the eternally existent -- Bread of Life (35). This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world (51). I AM your Life-Giver . The Observations of the Passover Matzah: 1) _____________________ - He is sinless. 2) _____________________ - He took our pain. 3) _____________________ - He took our punishment and penalty of sin. 4) _____________________ - He took our hell. 5) _____________________ - He took our death, and gave us life.
